Chapel Hill, North Carolina Chapel Hill is a town in Orange County, North Carolina, United States and the home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The population was 48,715 at the 2000 census; its population was listed at 54,492 in the Census Bureau's 2007 estimates. The town was named after an Anglican chapel on a hill, now known as Chapel of the Cross.Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh make up the three corners of the Research Triangle, so named in 1959 with the creation of Research Triangle Park, a research park between Durham and Raleigh. Geography Chapel Hill is located in the southeast corner of Orange County, with Hillsborough, to the north, Carrboro to the west, and Chatham County to the south. It is bounded on the west by the town of Carrboro and on the northeast by the city of Durham. However, most of Chapel Hill's borders are not contiguous to any other municipality and instead are adjacent to unincorporated portions of Orange County and Chatham County.According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.82 square miles (51.3 km2), of which 19.75 square miles (51.2 km2) of it is land and 0.07 square miles (0.181 km2) of it (0.35%) is water. Culture Chapel Hill and its surrounding area have historically been politically liberal. Orange County voted for Barack Obama 72%-27% over John McCain in the 2008 presidential election.The Chapel Hill-Carrboro school district, which covers most of the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, along with portions of unincorporated Orange County, is recognized for its academic strengths. East Chapel Hill High School and Chapel Hill High School have received national recognition for excellence, with Newsweek currently ranking East Chapel Hill High as the 77th best high school in the nation, and the highest ranked standard public high school in North Carolina . Archers of Loaf, Squirrel Nut Zippers, James Taylor, George Hamilton IV, Southern Culture on the Skids, Superchunk, Polvo and Ben Folds Five are among the notable musical acts whose careers began in Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill has also been a center for the modern revival of old-time music with such bands as the Hollow Rock String band, the Tug Creek Ramblers, the Two Dollar Pistols, the Fuzzy Mountain String band, Big Fat Gap and the Red Clay Ramblers. The population density was 2,466.0 people per square mile (952.4/km²). There were 18,976 housing units at an average density of 960.6/sq mi (371.0/km²). The racial composition of the town was 74.3% White, 12.3% Black or African American, 3.9% Hispanic or Latino, 9.7% Asian, 0.8% Native American, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.7% of other races, and 1.8% of Two or more races.Chapel Hill is North Carolina's best educated city, proportionately, with 77.0% of adult residents (25 and older) holding an associate degree or higher, and 77.0% of adults possessing a baccalaureate degree or higher (2008 Census American Community Survey).There were 17,808 households out of which 22.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.2% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 54.3% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.5 males.The median income for a household in the town was $51,690, and the median income for a family was $91,049. Males had a median income of $50,258 versus $32,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $35,796. About 8.6% of families and 19.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.6% of those under age 18 and 5.6% of those age 65 or over.
